INTRODUCTION

This resource covers the recognition of domestic violence and abusive relationships in general practice. Key learning points for general practice nurses include characteristics of abusive relationships such as undue possessiveness and isolation, questions to ask, explaining available resources, and how to refer.

After completing this module general practice nurses should be better able to:

• Describe the prevalence of domestic violence
• Be aware of patient presentations that may indicate domestic violence
• Know which questions to ask about domestic violence
• Know when to offer to refer the patient for further help
