INTRODUCTION

This module discusses the morbidity caused by excessive alcohol consumption, effective screening tools, brief interventions and when to refer. Key learning points for general practice nurses include understanding community-based alcohol detoxification, and prognosis for patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this module general practice nurses should be better able to:

Describe the difference between WHO and DH classifications of drinkers
Recognise that the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is the gold standard screening tool
Understand the role of medically assisted withdrawal
Advise patients on engagement with support groups
Explain the effectiveness of treatment for patients who have misused alcohol
