A large and visible organ with a range of functions:

  • Defence against infections and infestations
  • Protection from uv irradiation, irritants and injury
  • Control of water and heat loss
  • Sensing pain, touch, itch, heat and cold
  • Synthesis of vitamin D
  • Social communication and sexual contact

Skin conditions are a frequent reason to consult a GP with a new problem, the most common reasons being skin infection and eczema. Skin diseases, particularly hand dermatitis, can cause disability and loss of earnings. Significant impairment of quality of life is documented for skin diseases (particularly for atopic eczema and psoriasis). Psychosocial morbidity may go unrecognised without the use of appropriate assessment tools.
